VEGGIE RX
FOOD AS MEDICINE

In partnership with Same Canoe, Kohala Food Hub was able to offer Veggie RX, a food access program connecting fresh, local produce with qualifying Hawai'i Island residents through August 2024. Over the course of three years, we served over 140 North Kohala families with fresh and healthy food.

Applicants must meet two of the following criteria to qualify:

  • Be Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, or Filipino

  • Qualify as Low Income*

  • Have a chronic health condition

Once approved, participants are eligible to receive two free bags of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables per month for 7 months.

“I just want to say that it has been really wonderful to be able to receive a variety of fresh produce from local farmers. I have a small vegetable garden, but not the variety of fruits and vegetables that I receive from the Veggie Rx project. There’s not a large choice of fresh fruits and vegetables that are locally grown at the local markets... The program has been a big plus to adding a healthier diet for me."
